Deep Well Project- Rent and Utility Assistance
The Deep Well Project helps neighbors in need by providing basic assistance in emergency situations. This assistance is immediate and non-bureaucratic, and it’s intended to provide clients with “a hand up, not a hand-out.”
Financial aid, in the form of rent and/or utility payments, made directly to the provider, is granted on an emergency basis, generally to individuals who have been residents of Hilton Head Island for at least three months, paying their own rent and utilities, before their application.
The process starts with a phone call to their office, with applicants being interviewed by a trained volunteer to determine eligibility. Payments are made directly to the utility or landlord, ensuring the money is spent on the intended purpose. A return to self-sufficiency is the goal.

Deep Well Project
The Deep Well Project helps neighbors in need by providing basic assistance in emergency situations. This assistance is immediate and non-bureaucratic, and it’s intended to provide clients with “a hand up, not a hand-out.”
Individuals in need of food may call Deep Well, speak with a volunteer to see if certain criteria are met, and arrange to come in and shop or receive a food delivery. They consider a number of pre-determined criteria in approving a client request and even try to accommodate those with special dietary needs. One simple requirement is a working telephone number to assure someone is home when the delivery is made. When the request is approved and delivery is required, food is selected from their pantry shelves, bagged and delivered by volunteers.

Employment Layoff
South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW)
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, DEW is taking extra steps to quickly extend benefits to unemployed workers. On March 19, the department eliminated its usual one-week waiting period for people who apply for unemployment insurance between March 15 and April 18. That means payment to approved claimants should arrive one week earlier.
On March 19, DEW also suspended the requirement that unemployment insurance claimants apply to two jobs per week in order to receive benefits for those who apply for unemployment between March 15 and April 18.
Check eligibility requirements and disqualifications on the DEW website.
